Last
night I posted a rather bold and forthright statement of my beliefs about
politics and Christianity. I am grateful beyond measure for the many people who
praised my words and supported my post. Perhaps one woman expressed it best
when she said, “How did you read my mind?” Others pointed out that I tarred all
Republicans with one brush, which was a mistake on my part. And some just flat
disagreed, saying that I didn’t understand the Republican party. He’s right
about that—I don’t.
But
tonight, I want to leave you with something written by Martin Niemöller, a
Protestant pastor who was a strong critic of Hitler. Ultimately, Niemöller
spent seven years in a concentration camp. Here’s what he wroteFirst they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
That,
my friends, is why I speak out loud and clear about my political beliefs.
Thanks to all of those who love me in spite of it—or because of it.
