Two pitfalls that I've often seen, though. While Mr. King may be able to get away with killing a pet on the first several pages, that will stop many readers today from going further (some may throw the book across the room!). The other potential problem is using pets simply as prop pieces--the pet is introduced, then the hero runs around solving stuff, and only returns 3 weeks later to a cat/dog that hasn't been fed, walked, etc. What you describe--Bacardi and the relationship, the caring about him being missing--THAT is the way to manage things! *s* Oh, and yes, my biz is pets both in my books and 'real life' job.
